In a major segment at Friday night’s Impact Wrestling television taping event, Matt Sydal defeated Taiji Ishimori to become both the X-Division Champion and the Impact Grand Champion.

Sydal won the Impact Grand Championship from Ethan Carter III at the last set of television tapings, which took place shortly after November’s Bound for Glory pay-per-view. There has been a lot of speculation about the title’s future as the unique ruleset established for the belt, which involves a series of judges and timed rounds, has not been implemented at all during this week’s shows.

It’s unknown exactly when the big title change is expected to air, although it appeared to take place on the 5th or 6th show they’ve taped this week, which should put it around the end of February or first week of March.
