Io Shirai returned to NXT TV last night, appearing for the second time since losing the NXT Women’s Championship to Raquel Gonzalez at April’s TakeOver: Stand & Deliver. After music artist Poppy was called out by Candice LeRae, Poppy brought out Shirai. Shirai beat down LeRae and sent her out of the ring with a springboard dropkick. Shirai then had a staredown with Gonzalez as she headed to the back.

Ahead of TakeOver, a “global press conference” with Karrion Kross, Raquel Gonzalez, Ember Moon, Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, Johnny Gargano, Pete Dunne, Cameron Grimes, and LA Knight will air on Peacock/WWE Network and WWE’s social media platforms at 11 a.m. Eastern time this Saturday.
During an appearance on the Wrestling Perspective Podcast, CM Punk called Roman Reigns the best guy that WWE has: “Maybe he needed that adversity and that backlash to finally be this guy but this is the one thing they’re doing right, what can you say bad about what Roman Reigns is doing right now? He’s far and away the best guy they have. When you talk about storylines, in-ring work and all that stuff, right now he’s the total package. For the first time in his career, and I’m not being mean to Roman Reigns, I just feel like he’s finally where they pushed him to be, it just took a minute.”
The Undertaker also praised Reigns in an interview with Sports Illustrated: “I’m so proud of where he is. The night of Survivor Series [in November], I went up to Roman and Jey and said, ‘This is the most compelling story that we’ve done in a while.’ And where he’s been able to take it, it’s so good. It’s not forced. Roman is hitting on all cylinders.”
Sasha Banks is the guest on today’s episode of Just Women’s Sports with Kelley O’Hara.
Pete Dunne, Adam Cole, Ember Moon, Ted DiBiase, LA Knight, and MSK appeared on this morning’s edition of WWE’s The Bump
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Team WWE vs. The Nexus from SummerSlam 2010, Shayna Baszler vs. Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Championship from TakeOver XXV, and Keith Lee vs. Karrion Kross for the NXT Championship from TakeOver XXX.
Other Wrestling
Following Lio Rush’s retirement from pro wrestling, AEW’s Tony Khan issued a statement wishing Rush the best: “Lio Rush reached out to me today, and he shared that he’d planned to announce his retirement from pro wrestling tonight. While this news was unexpected, I’m glad that he’s made a choice that he’s confident will make him and his family happy. Lio is a great talent, and I enjoyed briefly working with him, and I absolutely wish him the best.”
MLW’s Court Bauer also commented on Rush’s retirement: “Lio is a brilliant athlete who made a difficult decision but one that I admire for his commitment to putting family first. I along with everyone at Major League Wrestling wish Lio continued success with the next chapter of his life and thank him for sharing his extraordinary talent with the world.”
During his appearance on Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions podcast, Tommy End (formerly known as Aleister Black) discussed how he reacted to WWE releasing Zelina Vega: “Mind you, they let my wife go, under reasons that are questionable. Everything got sorted out, everything is fine, everything was okay. But they called me and they’re like, ‘We understand this is putting you in a tough spot.’ I said, ‘No, this is my career. Spoke about it with her, and this is business between you and her. Does Tom, her husband, have an opinion on it? Sure he does. Does Aleister Black the professional? Nope. He’s ready to go to work. All I want to do is work, all I want to do is create, all I want to do is present.’ And you know, she agreed.”
PWInsider reported that they’ve heard from indie promoters who have reached out to Adam Scherr (formerly known as Braun Strowman) that his asking price is currently in the five-figure range.
AEW revealed this week’s roster rankings.
