UFC’s reigning Light Heavyweight Champion and self-diagnosed “massive wrestling fan” Daniel Cormier had a lot to say about a certain spot in a Young Bucks match at this Friday’s ROH Final Battle pay-per-view. It began with a tweet from fellow MMA fighter Phil Baroni (yes, the same Phil Baroni that desperately wanted to fight CM Punk) and evolved into a full blown conversation on today’s modern “high spot” culture in pro wrestling.
First, the spot in question:

The Young Bucks and fellow Bullet Club brother Hangman Page were defending the ROH World 6-Man Tag Team Championships at Final Battle, against the wild high-flying team of Flip Gordon, Titan and Dragon Lee. Cormier responded to the video calling the spot “pathetic”.
“This is actually pathetic. This is what people wanna see? Go to a god dang gymnastics competition. Suplex, bodyslam, piledriver do some old school wrestling man. DDT, I remember when the Frankensteiner was the most you’d ever see someone flip. I say Boo to this BS.”
The UFC champion then began engaging with others on Twitter, in particular wrestling and MMA journalist Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com, who cited the Young Bucks’ massive popularity as proof that their style of wrestling obviously appeals to a sizable audience.

Cormier continued pleading his own case, claiming that wrestlers are “just out there searching for” crowd chants. He even praised WWE Superstar Bobby Roode for his particular style.

“I believe what happened is now guys are just out there searching for that. Just wrestle the match and when the high spot happens fans will appreciate it. Do you remember when a chair shot was considered crazy. Those days are gone! 22 chair shots to the head lol”.
“I get it and I applaud them for doing it. Always make money. Not my cup of tea. Give me a spine buster and I’m good. [Arn Anderson style. That’s why I love Bobby Roode. Spinebuster, powerbomb. Shit like that. I expressed my opinion.”
