The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) continued to impress this season with another top showing at the 2015 Holiday Inn/Husky Open on Saturday, Dec. 12. This marked the 45th anniversary of the Husky Open, which was started by former SCSU head wrestling coach John Oxton.
SCSU gained individual titles at the Husky Open at 133-pounds, 141-pounds, 149-pounds, 165-pounds, 174-pounds, 184-pounds, 197-pounds and 285-pounds. No team scores were kept in this “open” tournament that took place in SCSU’s Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse and included many of the region’s top collegiate wrestling teams.
This year’s John Oxton Outstanding Wrestler award was presented to SCSU junior Austin Goergen, who won the top spot at 285-pounds with a 3-0 record. In the bout for first place in the bracket, Goergen scored a 4:20 pin against Donald Longendyke of Augsburg. In the semi’s, Goergen chalked up a 14-3 major decision win over Minnesota’s Nathan Rose and he opened the day with a 6:34 pin against Vincent Feola of North Dakota State.
The Jack Gause Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time award was given to SCSU senior Clint Poster, who won the tournament title at 165-pounds. Poster owned a 4-0 record in the tournament, which included pins of Brady McFarland of Augsburg (2:12), Marcus Blount-McKinley of Rochester CC (2:08) and Connor Hanson of Rochester CC (1:26). In the title match, Poster scored a 9-2 win over Dylan Urbach of Minnesota.
At 133-pounds, Jarred Oftedahl won the top spot and Taner Trembley won top honors for the Huskies at 141. In action at 149-pounds, Jay Hildreth won first place honors and Poster won first at 165-pounds.
The wins continued with a first place finish by Clayton Jennissen at 174-pounds and a top finish by Uthman Rabiu at 184-pounds. SCSU capped the contest with a first place finish by V.J. Giulio at 197-pounds and Goergen at 285-pounds. Complete results for the matches are listed below.
