LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ichabod Crane’s (N.Y.) Calista Phippen, Bristol’s (Pa.) Hailey Sweeney and East Carter’s (Ky.) Montana Fouts were selected MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week for games played the week of June 4-10.
East Region
Behind a nearly flawless performance, Phippen keyed Ichabod Crane (Valatie, N.Y.) to a 2018 NYSPHSAA Class B state championship. The senior struck out 33 and allowed just one hit over 14 innings of work. Phippen no-hit Olean in the semifinals and then one-hit top-ranked Susquehanna Valley in the title clash. Against the Huskies, she fanned 20 batters and walked two. Phippen followed that by striking out 13 and surrendering just one hit versus the Sabers.
North Region
Sweeney was pivotal in helping Bristol reach the state semifinals. In a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Wyalusing Valley, She hit the game-tying two-run homer in the top of the seventh, setting up her team’s walk-off quarterfinal victory. In the contest, she was 2-for-3 with a triple, homer, three RBI and two runs scored. On June 4, Sweeney doubled, tripled and drove in five runs in a 14-7 win over Conwell-Egan Catholic. The senior was 3-for-4 and scored four times against the Eagles.
South Central Region
Fouts, earning her third weekly plaudit this year, capped off a stellar prep career, leading East Carter (Grayson, Ky.) to its first KHSAA state semifinal appearance. The senior hurler tossed 36.1 innings, including 28 (420 pitches) on Friday, June 8, helping the Raiders stay alive in the elimination bracket. She twirled four shutouts and struck out 64 batters. After blanking Butler (12 K, 1 BB, 4H) on Thursday, Fouts suffered her first loss of the season, 2-1, to Warren East. That is when she dug in and passed the endurance test, recording three straight shutouts to cap off East Carter’s four-game Friday. She earned a no-decision in her final start (1.1 IP, 0 R) as fatigue set in. Fouts struck out her the last batter she faced and finished her prep career with 1,964.

The MaxPreps/NFCA High School Players of the Week are announced on NFCA.org every Monday during the spring season with a player from each of five separate high school regions is selected. During the fall campaign, one representative is chosen from the participating regions.
