#NFCAPLAYBALL: A look at pre and post-convention educational opportunities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Each year at the NFCA National Convention, the Association offers continuing education classes and seminars that are taught by some of the top coaches in the sport. In 2018, there are six of these courses that were created to help coaches continue to enhance their professional skills.

A total of three National Fastpitch Coaches College (NFCC) classes will bookend the convention program, while three pre-convention seminars are offered on Wednesday morning, Dec. 5. The first two NFCCs will be prior to convention on Dec. 3-4 with the post-convention class being taught Dec. 8-9.

NFCC 402A – Advanced Analysis of Pitching
Instructors: Larissa Anderson (Missouri), Lori Sippel (Nebraska), Cindy Bristow (Softball Excellence)

Synopsis: Back by popular demand! A record crowd in the first-ever offering of this course one year ago has set the stage for the return of in-depth pitching education. This course will provide two days of detailed information on the technical aspects of pitching; serving to enhance your ability to analyze and teach selected fundamental individual skills to today’s pitcher.

NFCC 407 – Winning Strategies for Game-Day Coaching
Instructors: Deanna Gumpf (Notre Dame), Amy Hogue (Utah), Randy Schneider (Centennial HS)

Synopsis: Join some of the best in the business as they share their methods of success across all areas of competition. Beginning with personnel evaluations and film study, into the creation and execution of a game plan, through the planning of a pre-game warm-up, to delivering the post-game speech, this class has you covered with “all things game day.” You will develop and apply the skills of coaching through observation, analysis of game clips and real-time strategy decisions.

NFCC 406 – Coaching Dynamic Team Practices
Instructors: Kate Drohan (Northwestern), Patrick Murphy (Alabama), Shonda Stanton (Indiana)
Synopsis: One of our most highly-attended courses, Coaching Dynamic Team Practices covers the ins and outs of assessing team needs, developing a practice plan for various types of practices, maximizing staff and player involvement, learning to make adjustments on the fly and using all your resources to keep players engaged.

Pre-Convention Seminars
The trio of pre-convention seminars will be held, Wednesday Dec. 5 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Signing up is simple. When you register for convention, you have the option of adding (for an additional fee) one of these three excellent seminars.

Lessons in Leadership: A Letter to My Younger Self
NFCA Executive Director Carol Bruggeman, USA Softball standout Amanda Chidester and NFCA Hall of Famers Sheilah Gulas (retired), Rhonda Revelle (Nebraska) and Ralph Weekly (Tennessee) share insight on ‘lessons learned’ throughout their careers and offer valuable tools on how to tackle challenges on and off the playing field.

Fill up the Boxscore! Developing a Complete Offense
Looking for new ways to create offense and score more runs? This seminar will help! Tyra Perry (Illinois), Craig Snider (Florida State) and Joe Yegge (DePaul) will teach you innovative techniques on aggressive baserunning, short-game strategies and power hitting. Find solutions to common issues and creative ways to utilize your lineup.

Team Culture Toolkit – Bo Hanson (Athlete Assessments)
Internationally respected coaching consultant Bo Hanson will provide a ‘how to’ for developing and sustaining an effective team culture. This seminar is jam-packed with examples and activities to provide you with a complete tool kit to use with your own team.
