LOUISVILLE, Ky. – As a result of her outstanding play over the past week, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has selected senior Leah Kalkwarf of Millard South High School in Omaha, Neb., as the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Player of the Week.
Kalkwarf batted .750 (9-12) with three home runs, nine RBI and six runs scored as she helped Millard South (31-2) to its fourth straight Nebraska Class A State Championship. The leftfielder recorded at least one hit in all four contests, which included a perfect 6-for-6 (3 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R) performance in the first two games.
However, her most important hit came in the semifinal against Pampillion-LaVista. Kalkwarf provided the game with its only offense, stroking a one-out two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game-winning base knock broke a scoreless duel and lifted the Patriots to a 2-0 victory. She capped off her prep career with a hit and two runs in the title-game victory over Omaha Marian.
