According to our colleagues at France Football, Ligue 1 side Marseille turned down the chance to sign Leicester City’s revelation Riyad Mahrez last January.
The Algerian international’s representatives initially reached out to Marseille assistant coach Franck Passi to offer OM the chance to sign Mahrez who was at that point at a Leicester City side in the depths of a relegation battle.
Passi passed the conversation over the Marseille President Vincent Labrune, who ridiculed the idea. According to the report, Labrune had the following to say on the situation at the time:
“Do you really think Leicester City and USM Alger players can really have a place at Marseille in this project of ours? In short, in order to save us time and to remain professional, the probability that we take this opportunity is zero.”
Labrune then allegedly messaged Mahrez personally:
“I hope you won’t take this badly but I can’t stand being taken for a fool.”
