LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan University continued its unbeaten streak with a 6-0 run to capture the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic over the weekend, and two players that have played a huge part in that success — reigning Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year Hanna Hull in the circle and Amy Large in the outfield — helped the Marlins sweep Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III National Pitcher and Player of the Week honors.

For Hull, it is her second-straight Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III National Pitcher of the Week honor. Not surprisingly, Hull and Large also gave the (14-0) Marlins a sweep of Pitcher and Player of the Week honors in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Sophomore left-hander Hull went 3-0 at the Leadoff, allowing just 10 hits and three runs over 21 tournament innings — all against ranked teams — while striking out 27 and walking eight. The Chesterfield, Va., native tossed a two-hit shutout in a showdown with previously unbeaten Texas Lutheran, fanned 10 in a 2-1 eight-inning victory over Moravian, and limited East Texas Baptist to just two hits in another victory.

Hull was National Pitcher of the Week three times last season, when she earned Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Freshman of the Year honors.

Senior outfielder Large, meanwhile, was huge at the Leadoff, batting .471 with a triple, three homers and 15 runs batted in over six contests. The Unionville (Pa.) High product went 2-for-3 with two homers and six RBI in Virginia Wesleyan’s first Leadoff game against William Paterson.

Through 13 games this season, Kennett Square, Pa., native Large is hitting .433 with two doubles, a triple, three homers and 19 RBI, while playing flawlessly in right field for Virginia Wesleyan, which has now won 20 straight games going back to the end of the 2017 season.

Linfield senior catcher Emily Allen hit .526 with six runs, three doubles, a homer and six RBI, while collecting 20 putouts and two assists in a perfect week on defense. … George Fox sophomore outfielder Roni Braun had two homers — including a grand slam — and seven RBIs over six games. … Salisbury senior center fielder LeAnne Collins went 8-for-10 (.800) with nine runs, two doubles, a triple, a homer and a 1.500 slugging percentage from the leadoff spot. … Randolph-Macon freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Deeter went 4-for-5 (.800) with three runs, two doubles, a homer, four RBI and two steals in a doubleheader against Frostburg State. … Calvin junior pitcher Anna Gernant went 2-0 with 28 strikeouts over 15 innings at Transylvania’s Pioneer Classic. She struck out nine against the host school, then set the single-game school record with 19 in a two-hitter against Olivet. … Buena Vista freshman catcher Carlee Guyett batted .667 (6-for-9) with four RBI on offense and had nine putouts and one assist on defense. … Berry senior pitcher Kassie Howard won five games, striking out an average of 7.2 batters per outing (36 total over 24 innings). …  Manchester senior outfielder Mallorie Jennings was 4-for-8 (.500) with four runs, a double, two homers, seven RBI and a 1.375 slugging percentage. … Concordia (Texas) freshman pitcher Simone Langland tossed the first no-hitter for the Tornados since 2011, and the first seven-inning no-hitter in school history, fanning seven and walking one against McMurry. … St. Catherine graduate shortstop Kylie Macziewski hit .526 over six Leadoff Classic games, breaking the school record for career homers (18) in a 10-3 win over Pacific Lutheran, when she finished a triple short of a cycle.
