John Ratcliffe To Be Nominated For National Intelligence Head

WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump said Sunday he plans to nominate Republican U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe of Texas to be director of National Intelligence.

“A former U.S. Attorney, John will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves,” wrote Trump.

Current Director Dan Coats will leave the office Aug. 15, wrote Trump.

“I would like to thank Dan for his great service to our Country,” he wrote.

The former mayor of Heath, Texas, and former federal terrorism prosecutor, Ratcliffe is one of the most conservative voices in the House. He balanced the city’s budget for eight straight years without raising taxes. As a prosecutor, Ratcliffe arrested 300 immigrants who entered the country illegally in one day, and cracked down on drug trafficking and public corruption.

As a federal lawmaker, Ratcliffe served on the intelligence, homeland security, judiciary and ethics committees. He supports limited government, has backed key conservative legislation, and introduced dozens of bills ranging from protecting children from exploitation to improving the federal government’s cybersecurity by working with private businesses.

A staunch supporter of Trump, Ratcliffe is the son of two school teachers and the youngest of six children. He attended the University of Notre Dame and earned a law degree from Southern Methodist University. He and his wife have two daughters and live in Heath.

Trump was enamored with Ratcliffe’s rebukeof former special counsel Robert Mueller during his House Judiciary Committee testimony, Axios reported.

“The special counsel’s job, nowhere does it say that you were to conclusively determine Donald Trump’s innocence or that the special counsel report should determine whether or not to exonerate him,” Ratcliffe told Mueller.

Ratcliffe added: “I agree with Chairman Nadler this morning when he said Donald Trump is not above the law. But he damn sure should not be below the law, which is where Volume II of this report puts him.”
