Intercontinental title changes hands at WWE Clash of Champions

Sami Zayn is WWE’s new undisputed Intercontinental Champion.

In the opening match of tonight’s Clash of Champions main card, Sami Zayn defeated Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles in a triple threat ladder match to win the Intercontinental title. Zayn got the win after spots where he handcuffed both of his opponents.

Zayn handcuffed Hardy to a small ladder by using the piercing in Hardy’s earlobe. Soon after that, Zayn stopped Styles from climbing a ladder by handcuffing himself to Styles. Styles tried to climb the ladder despite being handcuffed to Zayn. Hardy got back into the ring while struggling to deal with the ladder that he was handcuffed to. Zayn then revealed that he had the key to the handcuffs in his mouth. He freed himself, handcuffed Styles to the ladder, and retrieved both Intercontinental title belts that were hanging above the ring.

Zayn was interviewed after the match and said he didn’t recapture anything — the title has been his all along and he’s still Intercontinental Champion.

Zayn returned to WWE television last month still claiming to be the rightful Intercontinental Champion. With Zayn having not appeared since retaining the title against Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 36, the Intercontinental Championship was declared vacant in May. Styles became Intercontinental Champion by winning a tournament in June but lost the title to Hardy on the August 21 episode of SmackDown.

The winner of tonight’s ladder match had to retrieve both Hardy’s Intercontinental title belt and Zayn’s old title belt.
