Donald Trump shifts sights from Kim Jong-un to Hassan Rouhani – but will his bellicose threats work with Iran?

Donald Trump’s latest foreign policy outburst on Twitter shows the US President intends to follow the same playbook that he used when dealing with North Korea.

Last year Mr Trump threatened "fire and fury" towards Kim Jong-un in one of many bellicose warnings directed at the North Korean regime.

Now, the US president has Iran in his sights, warning Iran’s leader Hassan Rouhani of historic "consequences" if it threatens the US again. 

Mr Rouhani does not appear to have yet earned a nickname like Kim’s "Rocket Man" sobriquet. But Mr Trump’s language – calling  the Iranian’s recent warning to the US as "demented" – echoed the tirades he aimed at Kim, in which he called the North Korean leader a…
