It is with regret that it was announced that Bobby “The Brain” Heenan passed away today at the age of 73.
Heenan is widely regarded as the greatest wrestling manager in history. He is best known for his runs in the AWA and the WWF in the ’70s and ’80s. He actually started his career in the ’60s managing the Assassins in Chicago. He eventually got into the ring as “Pretty Boy” Bobby Heenan but found his niche more as a manager outside the ring. With his sense of humor and quick wit, there aren’t many who would disagree with him.
Heenan worked many territories and companies over the years like Verne Gagne’s AWA, Georgia, The Midwest, WCW, and his best run in the WWF from 1984 until 1991 as a manager and becoming an announcer starting in the WWF and going to WCW in 1994.
He retired from wrestling after leaving WCW in the early 2000’s and tried to enter acting in commercials, unfortunately, in 2002 he was diagnosed with throat cancer, leaving him having part of his tongue removed and eventually his lower jaw. His health issues didn’t keep him from working as he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004 and regularly appeared in fan conventions, even if he could no longer speak.
With today’s news, his battle has finally ended.
Allwrestling.com and every old school fan who remembered his work over the years send our condolences to Heenan’s family and may he rest in peace.
