MINNEAPOLIS — Augsburg College will honor four outstanding wrestling teams from the past during its annual “Battle of the ‘Burgs” dual meet against Wartburg College on Thursday (2/5) night at Si Melby Hall.
The annual dual meet, which pits two of the top small-college wrestling teams in the country, will be held on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. The dual will feature the No. 5-ranked Auggies against the defending national champion and top-ranked Knights. In addition to the college dual, there will also be a high school dual meet between Farmington and Rosemount, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
Thursday’s meet will also feature the debut of a new traveling trophy belt for the series, the “Swens/Milboy Belt,” named for the coaches who built the two Lutheran colleges to national prominence in small-college wrestling — Augsburg’s Jeff Swenson and Wartburg’s Jim Miller. Augsburg will celebrate four wrestling teams from the past during its “Reunion of ‘5s’” prior to the dual meet — teams from 1974-75, 1984-85, 1994-95 and 2004-05. The 1974-75 squad, coached by John Grygelko, won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, went 13-1-1 in dual meets and finished second at the NAIA national championships, Augsburg’s best national finish to that point, with four All-Americans.
The 1984-85 squad, coached by Brian Arvold, went 15-3 in dual meets and won the MIAC championship. The squad finished ninth at the NCAA Division III national championships, with three All-Americans.
Augsburg’s 1994-95 squad, coached by Swenson, won the school’s third NCAA Division III national title. Augsburg went a perfect 16-0 in dual meets, won the MIAC title and had five All-Americans at the national meet, including national titlists Jesse Armbruster (126 pounds) and Tom Layte (150 pounds).
The 2004-05 squad, also coached by Swenson, won Augsburg’s ninth national title and had wrestlers in all 10 weight classes earn All-American honors — just the second time the feat had been accomplished in NCAA Division III wrestling history. Among the 10 All-Americans were four national titlists — 125-pounder Matt Shankey, 133-pounder Mark Matzek, 157-pounder Marcus LeVesseur and 174-pounder Joe Moon. Augsburg went 14-1 in dual meets during the 2004-05 season and won the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
