Which players helped their teams or hurt their teams? Which players touched the ball the most? You can now see the answers to these questions as the advanced statistics from the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup that was held in Japan last week have been compiled.
The first chart shown combines four categories for all players who played in the competition. The categories are
1. Player Set Wins
2. Average points scored per set for the player from their matches
3. Number of sets played for the player
4. Number of total possessions for the player
The line that is shown as average is the average for all players in that category. If you are above the line, you performed better than the average. The same would be true if you were below the line.
For set wins, Fernanda Rodriguez and Sheila Castro of Brazil were the dominant players with 3.39 and 3.21 set wins respectively. Jordan Larson-Burbach was the only other player above 3 set wins at 3.04. The worst players for set wins were Niverka Marte Frica of the Dominican Republic and Russian libero Svetlana Kryuchkova both at -0.65 set wins.
On the second row for the average points scored per set, Fabiana Claudino of Brazil was the leader at 3.73 points per set. Pleumjit Thinkanow of Thailand Cursty Jackson of the USA were second and third at 3.62 and 3.52 points per set respectively. Middle blockers are usually the leaders in this category.
Liubov Shashkova played in the most sets of any player in the tournament at 20.79 sets. Alisha Glass of the USA touched the ball on 758 possessions out of a total 1,302 possessions or 58.2%.
