It was a fitting final salvo to Bernie’s decade dance with the last hurrah contested in favorable running conditions with a record turnout.
HFC’s Dan Hart has been at the helm since Day One. “I don’t think we could have asked for anything more,” said Hart. “It was a beautiful day, we’re in the Pub Series for a third time and we had a record 507 entrants. We’ve had a good run with the event.”
Bernie’s was a Pub Series stop in both 2014 and 2015. The race is in memory of Bernie Logue, who died from a fall at the age of 30. Logue worked in the kitchen at the (race host) Village Manor before becoming head chef in the Boston Red Sox clubhouse.
“Bernie ran at Catholic Memorial and then at Bentley and was widely liked,’” said Hart. “There was talk of staging different events in his memory, including a golf tournament, and I mentioned holding a race.”
Ever since, the event has benefitted the Dedham Education Foundation and there’s no shortage of Dedham high schoolers jetting out at the start.
None were around when recent GBTC Distance Fest XC champ Stephen Curley of HFC led the throngs around the nearby industrial grounds and hit the mile in 4:47…only to have Pub Series leader Alex “Kid” Kramer ahead of him and teammate and defending Pub champion TJ Unger just behind.

Kramer would hold on for the win in 15:17 with Unger closing to within 4-seconds and relinquishing the 1-point he’d gained at the BHZ 5K; the “People’s Champion” is now 4-points off the leader in the overall standings. Curley closed in 15:28 for third, followed by Pubsters Chris Klucznik, Patrick Bugbee, and dominant Senior Greg Picklesimer of SRR.

A touch of irony in the women’s race as defending champion Amanda Watters—who won her first Pub Series this year at Doyle’s—was passed in the last 400m by Whirlaway’s Katrina Martin, who won her first-ever Pub Series race. Katrina entered the race 12th in the women’s standings. Martin clipped Watters by 1-tick in 18:23.
HFC Senior Siren Mimi Fallon took third in 18:31 with Series leader Holly Madden-Merrill of Whirlaway fourth in 18:34 as HFC’s Emily Larson closed out the top-5 in 19:24.

Series’ age-group juggernaughts Jennifer Stewart of Liberty (W40), Picklesimer (M50), Marge Bellisle (W60), TIR’s Dave Wessman (3-pts. Ahead of CSU’s Jon Waldron), Dave Pember (M70), Bill Riley (M80) and Anne-Marie McDonald (W80) look unbeatable (barring the unthinkable) going into Paddy’s on Oct. 14, but here’s a few…
Oddities: 1) Top Master Kevin Delaney of CSU has turned 50, but has a solid 18-point lead in the M40 division over TJ Unger, who turned 40 during the Series. Delaney can’t be beat and Unger is in the top-5 so HFC’s Dan Finkel along with Tom Corrigan move up to 2-3 (M40).
2) HFC’s Eileen Cakouros is in a W40 2nd-place tie at 19 points with Andrea Leverentz and can’t win, as she’s also turned 50…but with top Senior Holly Madden Merrill poised to win the whole enchilada, and Liberty’s Vicki Bok and HFC’s Mary McNulty moving up to 1-2, Eileen is guaranteed bronze in both the W40 & W50 divisions. There are only 3 contestants at W40 and more at W50 so a W50 entrant (Hello SRR’s Kate Maul) could be bumped up. Executive decision pending…

3) Whirlaway Septuagenarian world-beater Jan Holmquist was back at Bernie’s, but had already missed two races. Marshfield RR’s Regina Wright—the first woman to ever complete the entire series at W70—missed her 2nd race at Bernie’s, while the usually dependable Mary Tyler was absent at both the Corrib and BHZ races; hence, the W70 division is blank!
With M&W $100 primes at miles 1-2 and $250 in CR bonus money at Paddy’s the event should be even more of a barnburner than usual. We’ll be coming from the Hartford Marathon the day before so will be our usual effervescent selves! See you there. Men’s Standings – – Women’s Standings
