It was previously reported that according to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated Rey Mysterio was backstage at last Tuesday night’s SmackDown Live to finalize a new WWE deal that would see him return to the ring at WrestleMania 34, apparently in a match against John Cena.
According to a new report by Barrasso, the Cena vs. Mysterio match was brought to the table after it was ruled that The Undertaker will not be working this year’s WrestleMania event.
The John Cena vs. Undertaker Match had been expected to push through for a couple of months now but Cena did say during his promo last Monday night on RAW that he was told the match with The Undertaker was impossible and not happening. Further updates will be posted on The Undertaker’s WrestleMania status once it is made available but this is the first time it is possible that The Dead Man may not be working WrestleMania this year.
Regarding Mysterio’s new contract to work WrestleMania, the latest update is that the deal is expected to be finalized by the end of this week. Cena himself reportedly requested to work WrestleMania this year against either Samoa Joe, who is out injured, or Mysterio. Cena wanting to wrestle Mysterio at this year’s WrestleMania may have something to do with the strong buzz that Mysterio brought with his Royal Rumble appearance last January.
