Two Mavericks Take Home First Place Finishes at the Wisconsin Open

Kenosha, Wis—Minnesota State’s Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) and Matthew Blome (Fr., 184 lbs.)(Unattached) finished first at the Wisconsin Open Saturday in Kenosha.

Adam Cooling continued an impressive start to the season by finishing first at the 174 weight class in Kenosha. Cooling began the tournament with consecutive tech falls against Javier Reyes (Luther) 17-2, and Job Ayala (UW Parkside) 17-1. In the semifinal match Cooling bested Mike Kelly (Unattached) by a 4-0 decision, and secured first by gaining a 14-4 major decision over Tyree Overton (Lincoln College). Cooling improved to 11-1 on the season with his first place finish at the Wisconsin Open.

The Mavericks had three wrestlers place in the top six at the 184 weight class. Matthew Blome was Minnesota State’s second undefeated wrestler on the day when he won by fall in 2:59 over Justin Kreiter (Luther) in the first place match. Blome’s first place finish raised his record in tournaments this season to 14-1. Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) won in sudden victory by a score of 3-1 against Randy Caris (Findlay) to finish third, and Gage Thom (R-Fr. 184 lbs.) finished sixth after wrestling both Blome and Abernathy at the tournament.

Logan Saltou (Fr., 157 lbs.)(Unattached) finished second for the Mavericks at the 157 weight class. Saltou wrestled his way to the first place match with a fall in 1:44 over Javier Orozco (Triton College), a win by injury default against Jake Anderson (Chadron State), and a tech fall over Travis Ostby (Luther) by a 22-5 mark. Saltou has placed in every tournament that he has competed in for the Mavericks this season.

Daniel Close (So., 141 lbs.) finished 3-1 at the Wisconsin Open which earned him a third place finish at the event. Close won his first match of the day by a 15-2 major decision and then wrestled through the consolation semifinal match to reach the third place match. There, Close was able to secure third by overtaking James Coransaniti (Shorter) by a 7-5 decision.

The two additional Mavericks that placed at the Wisconsin open were Colby McIntire (R-Fr. 149 lbs.) sixth and Darick Vancura (Sr. 197 lbs.) fifth.

Next up for the Mavericks will be two home dual matches at the Taylor Center on Sunday December 11. The Mavericks will first face Truman State University at 12 p.m. and Minot State University at 2 p.m. Truman State currently has a dual record of 4-1 while Minot State has a dual record of 1-2 early in the season.
