LA CROSSE, Wis. — For the third straight year, Augsburg College’s Donny Longendyke (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) will wrestle for the NCAA Division III heavyweight national title, advancing with a 10-1, major-decision win in the semifinals during the third session of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday morning at the La Crosse Center.
In the semifinals, Longendyke avenged two earlier losses this season to Lance Evans of Wartburg (Iowa), dominating in a 10-1, major-decision victory. He scored 10 straight points after surrendering a second-period escape, converting a deep dive for a takedown into a four-point near-fall halfway through the second period, then claiming a takedown, earning a penalty point on a stalling call and collecting 3:05 riding time.
The 2015 Division III heavyweight national champion, Longendyke will face Zachery Roseberry of Delaware Valley (Pa.) in a rematch of last season’s national title match on Saturday night. Roseberry edged Longendyke 5-4 in last year’s national title match.
The 42nd Auggie wrestler to ever earn three All-American honors, Longendyke has a chance to become the 12th Augsburg wrestler, and third heavyweight, to earn multiple national championships in program history. He is now 27-3 on the season with 20 bonus-point wins (16 pins, four major decisions), 151-29 in his collegiate career with 113 bonus-point wins (85 pins, four technical falls, 24 major decisions), and 109-8 with 83 bonus-point wins (62 pins, four technical falls, 17 major decisions) in three seasons at Augsburg.
After the third session of the tournament, Augsburg stands in second place with 79.0 points, while defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) leads with 124.5 points. Johnson & Wales (R.I.) is in third with 61.5points, and Wabash (Ind.) is in fourth place with 56.5 points.
Three Augsburg wrestlers finished in third place in their weight classes in Saturday’s third session, while another Augsburg wrestler finished in eighth place. The five All-Americans bring Augsburg’s all-time total to 237 in school history (since 1969; 201 in NCAA competition, 36 in NAIA competition). Augsburg has had at least one All-American in national wrestling competition (NAIA and NCAA) every season since 1977, and has recorded five or more All-Americans 29 times in program history.
Owen Webster (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) lost his first match since November in the 184-pound semifinals, suffering a 5-3 loss to Justin Kreiter of Luther (Iowa). But he came back to take third with two impressive technical victories, a 6-2 triumph over Bryan Levsen of Wartburg and a 4-1 triumph over Jordan Bushey of Oswego State (N.Y.). He collected two takedowns and 1:19 riding time in the win over Levsen, then claimed a takedown late in the second period and claimed 1:22 riding time in the win over Bushey.
The loss to Kreiter snapped a 28-match winning streak and was Webster’s first loss to a Division III opponent this season. He finished the season at 33-2, with 23 bonus-point victories (10 major decisions, four technical falls, nine pins), and a 24-1 record against NCAA Division III opponents.
David Flynn (FY, Jordan, Minn./Scott West) surrendered a first-period takedown and could not overcome Dustin Weinmann of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a 3-0 semifinal loss at 141 pounds, but he came back with two impressive performances to earn third place. He scored a takedown and two near-falls before dispatching Clint Lembeck of Loras (Iowa) in a 2:20 pin in the consolation semifinals, then used a dramatic rally to top Devin Broukal of Wabash (Ind.) in a 12-9 decision. Flynn trailed 7-2 after the first period, but came back with a drive and a four-point nearfall midway through the second period, then scored a reversal and collected 2:53 riding time in the third period to score the win.
A mid-season transfer from Division I North Dakota State, Flynn finished 34-9 on the season (25-5 at Augsburg) with 19 bonus-point wins (14 pins, two technical falls, three major decisions). He is now 53-19 in his collegiate career.
Lucas Jeske (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had an incredible second day of competition, scoring three bonus-point wins to place third at 165. In his first match against Davon Jackson of Olivet (Mich.), Jeske claimed a takedown, reversal, and four near-falls to score a 16-0, second-period technical fall victory. He dominated again in his next match, a 21-6 technical-fall win over Anthony Arroyo of Baldwin-Wallace. He built a 9-3 first-period lead and did not look back, converting four takedowns and two near-falls in the win. He saved his best for last, with a 1:29 pin over Larry Cannon of Messiah (Pa.) in the third-place match.
Going 5-1 on the weekend, Jeske finished his first collegiate season at 26-8, with 15 bonus-point wins (eight pins, three technical falls, four major decisions).
Victor Gliva (FY, Farmington, Minn.) suffered two narrow losses on Saturday to finish in eighth place at 125, dropping a 5-3 decision to CJ Pestano of Central (Iowa) and a 4-3 decision to Bobby Jordan of Johnson & Wales (R.I.).
Finishing 32-7 on the season with 17 bonus-point wins (seven major decisions, four technical falls, six pins), Gliva helped make Augsburg wrestling history for his family. Along with his father Steve Gliva ’85, a five-time Augsburg wrestling All-American, the Glivas are the second father-son combo in Augsburg wrestling history to both earn All-American honors, joining the Adams’ father and son — father Bob ’83 and son Jason ’10 — as the only duos to accomplish the feat.
