Man Waiting In Line At Waterpark Pushed Boy 31 Feet: Charge

APPLE VALLEY, MN — An 18-year-old Maple Grove man has been charged with felony third-degree assault in connection with an incident at the Apple Valley Aquatic Center Tuesday. Police say Roman Adams picked up an 8-year-old boy and pushed him over the railing as they were waiting in line on a waterslide platform.

The boy suffered several fractures to both his feet, a broken femur in one leg, and shattered bones in a shoulder, according to authorities.

Adams told police the line was taking too long so he pushed the boy and watched him fall, the criminal complaint states.

The boy fell more than 31 feet to the ground, according to investigators. He was conscious and breathing when officers arrived.

Witnesses said there was no interaction between the two prior to the incident. The boy and suspect do not know each other, according to investigators.

Police said the 18-year-old may be developmentally delayed, but he knew what he did was wrong.

“When we spoke with him, he was able to tell us that he knew what he did, he knew what he did was wrong, he knew what he did was going to hurt someone,” Police Capt. Nick Francis told the Star Tribune.

The boy will need several surgeries, according to Francis.

Authorities told KARE 11 Adams was at the waterpark with a personal aide, but the aide was not on the platform at the time of the incident.
