Director Says Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Luke Skywalker ‘100% Consistent’ With the Original Trilogy

Nearly one year after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Director Rian Johnson took to Twitter in defense of the portrayal of Luke Skywalker in his film.

Johnson’s tweet reads: “Hot take: Luke is in fact 100% consistent with his character (not the way he’s described in marketing blurbs, but his actual, based-on-his-words-and-actions character) from the OT. I’ll be at the bar if you need me.”

The comment from Johnson came in after a thread began on Twitter with multiple fans continuing to criticize how Luke was written into Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in comparison to the original trilogy.

As Twitter user @CurtisSams said in the discussion, “I would have loved to see Luke’s transformation as opposed to him just being grumpy.”

Criticism surrounding The Last Jedi came immediately after the premiere last year, with fans saying the film had a disconnect from the others. Johnson responded to the backlash on Twitter’s platform then, as well.

“The goal is never to divide or make people upset, but I do think the conversations that are happening were going to have to happen at some point if [Star Wars] is going to grow, move forward, and stay vital,” Johnson said in a tweet.

After the announcement came last November that Johnson would be writing and directing a new trilogy in the Star Wars universe, he said in March that he will not let any criticism from The Last Jedi influence the new story.

“I feel like every Star Wars thing that ever gets made has a big, loud response because Star Wars fans are passionate and that’s what makes them awesome,” Johnson said.

“I don’t think it’s possible if you’re really telling a story you care about and having it come from your heart it’s just not possible to be intellectually processing what everyone else wants. Nor would it be a healthy thing, I don’t think that’s a good way to tell a story,” Johnson added.

Johnson’s new Star Wars trilogy is currently untitled and is being produced by The Last Jedi producer, Ram Bergman, and President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy.
