FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — An 11-year-old Canadian boy will take home 17 stitches and whopper of a story from his summer vacation in Florida.
“It almost felt like human teeth,” Christian Mariani told reporters at Broward Health’s Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital Wednesday after being treated for a possible shark bite on his right foot.
“I knew something bit me, but just the fear of not knowing what bit you — and what’s going to happen to your foot after that is the scariest feeling,” the seventh grader confided.
WPLG-TV reported that Mariani was bitten in shallow water around 9 a.m. along Fort Lauderdale beach not far from the Ritz Carlton.
“My friend, here, was very lucky,” explained Dr. Francis Amador, who treated Mariani and said the wound looked like a semicircle.
Speaking in a wheelchair with a Pac-Man T-shirt and holding a stuffed shark, Mariani said he plans to look around when he goes back into the ocean.
“After I’ve healed — I probably will get back into the water,” he said confidently.
