Jean-Claude Juncker to have emergency surgery

EU executive confirms European Commission president forced to cut short vacation in Austria.

The president of the European Commission is expected to undergo emergency gallbladder surgery.

A statement from the EU executive said Jean-Claude Juncker, 64, had cut short his vacation in Austria, returned to Luxembourg and “will undergo an urgent cholecystectomy,” in reference to the removal of his gallbladder.

Juncker will step down from his position at the end of October, but had been expected to attend the upcoming G7 meeting in Biarritz, France, at the end of August.
