Le Parisien confirm Foot Mercato reporting that 31-year-old defensive midfielder Steven N’Zonzi is set to join Rennes on loan until the end of this season.
The World Cup winner’s move should be official in the coming hours, with a source close to the situation having the following to say: “Steven said yes to Rennes for several reasons, notably, the exciting footballing challenge that is being offered to him.”
N’Zonzi will be recalled by AS Roma from his season-long loan with Galatasaray 6 months early, before being sent back on loan to Rennes until the end of the current campaign.
This will give the ex-Sevilla and Stoke City man a chance to fight for a place at EURO 2020, in a project at Rennes which is seeking to qualify for the Champions’ League.
Celta Vigo and West Ham had also made proposals for N’Zonzi.

UPDATE: 18:00 CET: AS Roma have NOT yet agreed on the exact nature of N’Zonzi’s likely loan move to Rennes. The clubs are still negotiating over the amount of the Frenchman’s wages that Rennes will take on from now until the end of the campaign, according to L’Équipe.
Freelance journalist Ignazio Genuardi says to watch out for some last-gasp proposals from Everton and West Ham directly to AS Roma for Steven N’Zonzi. The Frenchman prefers Rennes, but if SRFC can’t satisfy AS Roma’s demands, the Italians might push him to England.
